In honor of Yamaguchi’s new doll and in support of AAPI Heritage Month, Barbie will split a $25,000 Barbie Dream Gap donation between Yamaguchi’s Always Dream and ASPIRE (Asian Sisters Participating in Reaching Excellence). The donation aims to support and empower Asian American women and girls while building a community that fosters education and mentorship. Yamaguchi’s doll, available as of April 24, is also a celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, honoring Yamaguchi’s history-making turn as the first Asian American woman to win the gold medal in figure skating at the Olympics. Robbie’s look for a press conference in Seoul, Korea, unlike some of the other looks from the tour, was a modern take on an iconic Barbie look, rather than an exact replication.

Beverly Hills marked the beginning of the official Barbie movie press tour and Robbie did not disappoint. After the release of the Barbie movie trailer in May, fans noticed this obvious reference to Barbie’s iconic pattern and Robbie made sure to include it in her own Barbie wardrobe. For Barbie‘s world premiere in Los Angeles, Margot Robbie surprisingly ditched the pink in favour of a classic black gown echoing one of Barbie’s most iconic lewks.

Besides designing a countless number of Barbie’s clothing and outfits, Spencer also designed outfits for the Ken, Skipper and Chelsea dolls as well. On March 9, 1959 (yes, she's Pisces girly), Barbie made her debut in the world. According to the History Channel, the doll was created when Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler found her daughter Barbara wanting to play with paper dolls over her baby dolls. Mattel modeled Barbie after the Lili doll, based on a German comic strip character and controversially known as a prostitute gag gift for bachelor parties. The company then bought the rights to Lili before making its own version and naming it "Barbie" in honor of Barbara. The doll, released in 1992, included ankle-long hair as one of its standout features.

The Totally Hair doll is the best selling Barbie doll in Mattel history, with over 10 million dolls sold worldwide. The doll holds a record for the world's longest successful toy sale (from 1992 to 1995). On July 6, for the Naucalpan de Juarez premiere in Mexico, Robbie wore a hot pink Balmain mini dress with the added details of a silver chain belt and matching earrings, both weighed down with star charms. In Seoul, Korea, Robbie wore two different looks for her press tour appearance, but the outfits weren’t from two different Barbies.

At 90 years old, Spencer still maintains her fashion and loves dressing in her favorite shades of pink. The criticism of Barbie's influence on body image reached its peak in the 2000s. Studies showed how the doll's extremely thin and singular figure negatively impacted children's self-esteem. Acclaimed costume designer Bob Mackie, who designed for Judy Garland, Diana Ross, and Marilyn Monroe, to name just a few, is credited for really putting Barbie on the map. As The Hollywood Reporter states, "Mattel might have created Barbie, but Bob Mackie made her famous."

President Barbie came with her hair in a voluminous blowout and a classic red lip to match her American-themed inaugural ball gown and power red suit. “Totally Hair Barbie was an extension of a long career working with hair play, stemming back to the 1960s. The 1992 Totally Hair Barbie (shown), the best-selling Barbie doll to date, celebrated the “big hair” craze and loud fashions of the early 90s. In the 1970s, Mattel discovered that hair play was a popular feature.[1] By the 1990s, most of their dolls had long hair to braid, cut, and groom. Totally Hair Barbie belonged to an official line of dolls, like Hollywood Hair Barbie and Cut 'n Style Barbie, made specifically for hair play. The next stop on Robbie’s press tour, her native country of Australia, marked one of the tour’s most iconic looks.

Fans, however, may not be as familiar with the mastermind behind Barbie’s unforgettable looks. You can't unpack how pop culture has shaped beauty ideals without talking about Barbie. Since debuting in 1959, the fashion doll has had a significant influence throughout the decades. The actress wears the 1961 Barbie Solo In the Spotlight look as she attends the Barbie premiere at Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall on July 9, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

Arriving as ‘Day to Night Barbie’ from 1985, Robbie was dressed head to toe in a shocking pink business-or-leisure suit (custom Versace), before swapping into a glamorous evening number. Thanks to the new release of the “Barbie” movie, KTLA’s interview with Spencer marks her 23rd interview this year alone. “I’ve always worn a certain amount of pink and now with Barbiecore in fashion, I’ve got pink on! Meet Carol Spencer, the creative mind behind all of Barbie’s most iconic fashions. The iconic Barbie doll has provided generations of entertainment for families across the globe.

The style was designed by Carol Spencer, who talked with Mattel Community Creations about the ideation for the doll in 2017. Margot Robbie showed off the best Barbie looks throughout the movie's press tour as well as on screen. The look represents the first doll of the brand’s “career” Barbies and couldn’t have been completed without the iconic pale pink handkerchief, black opera gloves and layered diamond necklace.

Yamaguchi’s doll and the other dolls in the Inspiring Women Series are available now. Yamaguchi’s Barbie wears a figure skating dress reminiscent of the one she wore when she won her gold medal at the ‘92 Olympic Games in Albertville, France. She even holds a large bouquet, just like she did after she skated more than 30 years ago. Last, but not least, Robbie went all out for the London premiere, wearing a custom Vivienne Westwood gown representing the 1960 Enchanted Evening Barbie. Robbie returned to California on July 9 for the Los Angeles premiere, wearing her most extravagant Barbie look yet. Everything, form the yellow shoulder bag to the white heels, was a nod to the 2015 Pink and Fabulous Barbie.

“Totally Hair” Barbie’s outfit was just as bold as her hair, with the doll wearing a multicolor Emilio Pucci-inspired printed minidress. In 2022, Mattel released a revised version of “Totally Hair” Barbie in honor of the 30th anniversary of the doll’s release. The updated version featured a diverse range of hair textures, color-changing clips and 14 other hair accessories.

Both of Robbie’s versions of the looks were designed by Versace to be a perfect lookalike to the 1985 doll. Mukamal and Robbie even went the extra mile, bedazzling a faux 1980s phone as an accessory. Ever since the Quick Curl Barbie in 1973, baby pink gingham has been a staple to Barbie’s wardrobe and Greta Gerwig did not forget that.

The release also offered a variety of long hairstyles in different textures, with a blond and a brunette Barbie. The doll’s packaging also included a comb and styling gel to encourage people to create spiked, voluminous and versatile hairstyles. Although Barbie is best known for wearing pink dresses and heels, Teenage Fashion Model Barbie, the original Barbie, wore a black-and-white striped swimsuit with a perfectly-placed high pony and Robbie made sure to include every detail. The look couldn’t be complete without the iconic white cat-eye sunglasses with blue lenses and a pair of patent leather peep-toe mules and to finish it off Robbie even included the red nail polish as a final detail. The original doll stood at about 11.5 inches tall with bleached blonde hair tied in a low ponytail with curly fringe bangs.

The Blonds designers David and Phillipe Blond partnered with Mattel to create three one-of-kind dolls and a collector's item available for purchase, the Diamond Barbie. She wore her platinum blonde hair in full Old Hollywood glamour waves, a classic cat-eye, and dark red lips for a bold statement. The “Totally Hair” doll featured ankle-length crimped hair, which aligned with the big and bold hairstyles that were popular in the ’90s.
